The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was established in 1916 on the island of Hawaii to preserve the environment around the world’s most active volcano. Home to hundreds of thousands of years of volcanism, migration, and evolution, the park today is home to a unique ecosystem that is full of rare species. Furthermore, ancient Hawaiian culture is quite alive in the area with the mythology and folklore that has been perpetuated from generation to generation. Kilauea, the active volcano, has been spewing out lava for several years and has expanded the area of the Big Island hundreds of acres since it first started erupting. Visitors to Kilauea and the national park are sometimes treated to the warm red glow of molten lava if they carefully watch at nighttime.
The sheer beauty of the area attracts thousands of tourists each year. While most visitors choose to stay in the hotels of the city of Hilo, several miles north of the park, there are also a number of Hilo vacation homes which are much closer to the park for people who wish to have convenient access to the park. Such homes are fully stocked and are often in the midst of scenic forestry.
Ask Doc Travel rates Hawaii as one of the most popular vacation spots for American Travelers, and is especially popular with American Express Vacations. There are many reasons why Hawaii is great, and those who have visited the island have a clear idea of why. To help you understand the many wonders of Hawaii, here are some things to keep in mind.
The Hawaiian Islands are eight main islands created by underwater volcanoes thousands of years ago. While the magma from these volcanoes cooled, they hardened into rocks becoming the islands. The main islands are Ni’ihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui and the Hawaii. Hawaii, also known as the Big Island, is the largest. This volcanic activity created the black sand beaches found on the Big Island and created the rich soil from which the vegetation feeds from.
The consistently warm climate of Hawaii is another reason why this is an extremely popular vacation destination. Because of the surrounding ocean, weather here is more moderate when compared to other tropical spots. Temperatures and humidity here are milder than in Caribbean or Mexico. Summer, however, has the highest temperatures, reaching the upper 80s, but never venturing into the 90s°F. Hurricanes are a rare occurrence in Hawaii, making it another good reason to visit.
Hawaii is monitored by American safety and health regulations, making it ok to drink the tap water, among other things. Also, you have all the rights of a United States citizen while vacationing here. If you need medical attention while on vacation, you have access to the regulated and state of the art healthcare found in Hawaii.
The beautiful blue water and sandy beaches are just part of the excitement. Here, you can also find shopping akin to that of Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, and many couture boutiques such as Coach, Gucci, and Tiffany’s. You can experience the cultural aspect of Hawaii by attending a luau. One of the popular ones is Germaine’s Luau in Kapolei, Oahu. To take in the history of the islands, be sure to visit Pearl Harbor. No matter what you do, you will never be bored.
With all these amazing activities in Hawaii, cost can play a big factor. Hawaii’s isolation is part of its beauty, but it also causes many amenities to be much more expensive. Hawaii also deals with American currency, which could make it expensive for foreign travelers. To save, you can look at vacation packages offered by hotel and travel providers which often include flight and overnight accommodations as well as car rentals. Keep in mind that consumer products, such as food and souvenirs tend to be expensive. Try to pack everything you need, like sunscreen, so you won’t have to buy them while on vacation.
Even with the costs, Hawaii is still a top destination for many reasons. This tropical destination with so many activities is a great place to relax and have fun on your vacation.

Lanai has only 3000 locals, and is very small when compared to the other islands. Despite this, Lanai has the best golf offered in Hawaii, and is perfect for golf enthusiasts. Maui is perhaps the most recognizable name out of all the Hawaiian Islands. Here, you can find elegant shops, great hotel service at many luxury resorts and the natural beauty that is prevalent on all the islands.
If you’re thinking of island hopping to enjoy all these islands, note that you will need a full day to enjoy Hawaii’s Big Island. The Big Island is a great vacation destination for fishers, and with lots of ocean space, you know you’re bound to get a good catch. Before you can take your trip, you will need to plan ahead for what you need. This includes reservations for your plane ride, lodging, and a boat.
Airline reservations are the first step to planning your vacation. You can scour the internets for a great deal, or look towards a travel website. With travel websites, especially ones that specialize in Hawaiian vacation, you can eliminate time spent researching. Through travel websites, you can also book your overnight accommodations. While hotels and resorts are options, do consider a vacation rental, which includes villas, condos, homes and apartments. Beachfront rentals are very popular, but don’t be discouraged if you can’t acquire one, as many rentals offer ocean views.
Once you have finished booking your travel plans, it’s time to focus on the fishing aspect of your planning. You have quite a few options that are listed in detail below.
If you have a boating license or proof of a completed training course, you have the option of renting your own boat. Many tourists enjoy this option, but keep in mind that there are many hoops you must jump through. You wouldn’t hand your house keys to just about anyone, and the same applies to boats. If you are able to rent your own boat for your vacation, you will be able to explore the ocean at your own leisure.
Charter boats are another option, and with this option, you have the privacy of your own boat, but you will not be driving or navigating it. You have a number of ways to charter a boat, from privately chartered fishing or group chartered boats. Private charters are the way to go if you’re looking for peace and quiet. Keep in mind that group charters are cheaper and a great idea if you’re on a budget. Be sure to examine other water-based activities during your vacation, as many charters offer other activities on board. This is great for couples and families as everyone can find something they like to do.
The last step to be sure your vacation goes smoothly is to examine your supplies. There is certain fishing equipment that you may not be able to take with you and will have to rent instead. Keeping that in mind, you may want to choose charters that include supplies, such as fishing poles and bait. Another option is to rent fishing supplies for your trip and keep them in your vacation rental during your stay. It will give you the option to fish whenever you desire, even if you aren’t on a boat.

My first visit to Hawaii was like many others, a quick visit to all the must see attractions, such as the North Shore, Diamond Head and Pearl Harbor on Oahu, while I visited Waipio on the Big Island. Everything seemed mixed up with each other on this rollercoaster of attractions. My second visit was much slower and relaxed. It was on this trip that my experience of the Big Island was more memorable than the first. While there were more places to visit, such as coffee plantations and shops, this island had remained virtually unchanged.
Punaluu was my first stop, a black sand beach that quickly became my favorite. Here, there was a large turtle on the same, and as I headed toward the water, I realized quickly there were many more. This was my first time swimming around turtles, and I remained calm, just as my friends had advised me. These curious creatures were graceful in the water as they swam around shore.
My next stop was Pu’uhonua o Honaunau, an ancient village that has been restored for visitors. While not on the map of this site, if you enter through the long driveway, and look towards the ocean, you will see a secluded area with water access that many locals swim in. Hearing the snorkeling in this area was great, I eagerly jumped in.
I was lucky enough to encounter another giant sea turtle. Suspended in the water, I had a quiet moment with the turtle where we made eye contact, before it swam away. When it did, I realized there were three more turtles surrounding me. This was when I realized how lucky I was, as many had shared that seeing these gentle creatures was a rarity, and I had the opportunity of seeing them twice.
For the rest of the day, every time I got into the water, turtles would be wandering around near by. I saw them at Keauhou Bay, and at Oahu’s Hanauma Bay and Ala Moana Park. I finally purchased an underwater camera so I could capture these turtles as memories of this unique vacation. My second trip to Hawaii is one I certainly will never forget.
